Yet Another MCG “Blockbuster”

The Melbourne Cricket Ground, at full attendance2006 ought to be a profit record breaking year for the MCC (that’s Melbourne Cricket Club in this case). The MCG - you will never hear me refer to it as “the G” - despite the ever growing trend amongst the uneducated ;-) - this year has hosted, or will host, The Commonwealth Games, The Soccer (yeh I know, football…) “friendly between Australia and Greece as part of our (yes Australia’s!!) World Cup build up, an Anzac Day (return of AFL to the MCG after the Commonwealth games) blockbuster between AFL heavyweights Collingwood and Essendon (not so heavy-a-weight this year I know), an AFL Grand Final (always a full house), and last, but this time not least, the Boxing Day Test Match.

Come on Australian (and English) cricket fans - here’s a chance to demonstrate a little realised fact - that Cricket is Australia’s most popular sport. How good would it be for the Boxing Day Test, to record the highest attendance for the year - expecially alongside those other “block-buster” events?

I always thought that the Gabba in Brisbane was referred to as the “G”.. Guess things are changing.. I’ve been down at the MCG once during a visit to Australia and it’s an awesome stadium..

Stu, do you intend on being there on Boxing Day?

An English victory would be so much sweeter in front of 100,000 Australians…

It would indeed be awesome, but I think fairly unlikely for the simple reason that for the Aus-Greece match, the capacity was expanded to 95K. This is not possible for AFL or cricket due to the size of the pitches.
That said, with all the hype over the ashes, I reckon sell-out crowds is more than just a possibility.

Yeh - I think I’ll be submitting the forms required for a leave pass from wife and kids, for the day after Christmas. I ventured up last year for the South Africa Test so I wonder what my chances will be two years runnings :-(

It’s unusual for me - born and bred just outside Melbourne, to have to think about going to the boxing day test this early. Dad took me up just about every year as a youngster but we usually only made final plans on Christmas afternoon, or sometimes on the morning before the game. That’s the luxury of living just an hour from a ground with, in those days, a capacity of 100K. (They have bigger stands now but removed all the standing room and bench/terrace seating so it actually holds less).
