As is often the case this year, other associate players have been in action for their county sides today. Ryan ten Doeschate bowled six wicketless overs for Essex against Kent and scored 14. The match is still going on at the time of writing, but Kent look to be cruising to a win.
Scotland’s Kyle Coetzer did improve on his first innings two for Durham against Yorkshire, but not by much as he was out for 14. Durham still did win the match by 195 runs however.
]]>Irish wicket-keeper Niall O’Brien is also in action for his county side Northamptonshire against Leicestershire, but he could only add two to his overnight score and was out for 78.
]]>Kyle Coetzer could only manage two for Durham against Yorkshire, and from a painstaking 41 deliveries. Their innings was dominated by 184 from Michael Di Venuto, who’s brother Peter played for Italy six years ago.
Denmark’s Freddie Klokker has taken over the wicket-keeper’s gloves for Derbyshire, but could only manage three in their first innings against Glamorgan. Glamorgan captain David Hemp was not out on 18 at the close of play.
Best associate performance of the day came from Irish wicket-keeper Niall O’Brien, who is unbeaten on 76 at close of play in Northamptonshire’s match against Leicestershire. In Warwickshire’s match against Cambridge UCCE, Scotland’s Calum MacLeod polished off the student’s tail end with 3/36.
]]>Niall O’Brien is also playing in Northamptonshire’s County Championship match against Leicestershire which began today, though his team have not yet batted.
]]>Nepal played the Pakistan Cricket Academy, losing the first two matches but gaining an unlikely win in the last. Vanuatu lost 2-0 to Fiji in a three match series, whilst Singapore whitewashed Malaysia to win the Stan Nagaiah Trophy.
Host nation Jersey is issuing a set of stamps to mark their first major cricket tournament.
Players and officials from the various teams have also been talking. Japan’s Alex Miyaji is interviewed here, whilst Afghanistan coach Taj Malik has rather dramatically claimed that he will throw himself into the Atlantic if his team don’t qualify.
Many of these stories can be found on the official website of the tournament here. Run in association with the excellent (well, I would say that!) CricketEurope team, the website will be providing regular score updates from all matches, including one completely live scorecard, lots of photos, audio interviews and video highlights.
]]>South African Ryan ten Doeschate continued the punishment for Surrey’s bowlers, blasting 60 from 31 balls.
South African? Yes he was born in South Africa, but as he is currently a Dutch international, he should be described as a Dutch cricketer. I expect in future to see the BBC describe Kevin Pietersen as South African, Owais Shah as Pakistani and Jamie Dalrymple as Kenyan.
I’m sending them a note pointing this out to them, I’ll let you know if it has any success.
**UPDATE**
The BBC replied to my e-mail within a few hours and have corrected the article. Good work BBC! It almost makes you worth the £140 I have to give you every year. Almost.
]]>John Blain bowled well to take 3/31 from his ten overs, whilst Scotland international (on the rare occasions he’s released) Kyle Coetzer could only manage seven for the Dynamos. Scotland were 52/5 in their 18th over when rain brought an end to the match, Durham winning by 46 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method.
Four other associate players were in county action aside from Coetzer in today’s Friends Provident Trophy matches. Kenyan Rageb Aga, now playing for Sussex on a British passport, scored four and conceded 31 runs from his four overs opening the bowling against Kent.
After Mark Pettini and Jason Gallian put on 269 for the Essex first wicket against Surrey, Dutchman Ryan ten Doeschate came in and clubbed 60 from just 31 balls. He later took 1/19 from two overs, his wicket being that of Surrey captain Mark Butcher.
Meanwhile, Niall O’Brien’s run of scores for Northamptonshire came to an end as he only scored seven in their match against Warwickshire.
]]>Meanwhile at the County Ground in Northampton, Irish wicket-keeper Niall O’Brien scored 95 opening the batting for Northamptonshire in their Friends Provident Trophy match against Leicestershire. It wasn’t enough to secure the win though, as HD Ackerman’s 139 helped Leicestershire secure a seven run win.
