Jersey win Division Two in thrilling final match

Yesterday’s Guernsey v Jersey match was the title decider and it was a cracking match. There was almost nothing to separate the two Channel Island teams, and Jersey’s winning margin was just one run.

It was the former county players who were the key men for both sides. Former Lancashire player Ryan Driver scored a fine unbeaten 113 for Jersey, whilst Lee Savident, ex of Hampshire, scored 98 for Guernsey.

Jersey will now play Norway sometime next year in a play-off for the sixth spot in Division One in 2010. In the other matches of the day, Gibraltar beat Germany by 5 wickets to secure third place and France beat Croatia by 6 wickets to secure fourth place.

Germany and Croatia finshed fifth and last respectively. Croatia will play a play-off against the winners of next year’s Division Three tournament to decide the sxith place in the 2010 Division Two tournament.

I don’t know how Guernsey managed to lose yesterday, it looked like they were coasting to victory.

It’s interesting that there are play-offs instead of straightforward promotion/relegation. It shouldn’t make much difference to Guernsey as I would expect them to beat Norway.

Does anyone know how many of these teams are likely to get into the expanded WCL?

Tom - Jersey will be playing Norway, not Guernsey.

I’d expect Guernsey to be put in Division Six, Gibraltar to be put in Division Seven and France (maybe Germany too) in Division Eight.

Oops, yes of course it’s Jersey.

Does this mean that Guernsey & Gibraltar are likely to leapfrog Germany who are in WCL already, rather than come in below them? And what about Norway who are ranked lower in WCL but higher in Europe. I must say I’ll be relieved when the whole system settles down and I know where I am with it. Still it’s good to see more countries getting a chance to progress.

I forgot about Norway, they’ll probably get the Division Six spot now I think about it, with Guernsey in Seven and Gibraltar in 8.

Germany aren’t in the World Cricket League at the moment.

Germany were in WCL Division 5 in 2008, finishing 7th ahead of Norway who finished 9th.

Indeed they were David, but they aren’t in the World Cricket League any more until the ICC announce which teams are in which of divisions six, seven and eight. No team that finished lower than fourth in Division Five currently has a World Cricket League place confirmed. We can make a best guess, but nothing more.

Andrew that’s correct. I misinterpreted your earlier posting and thought you meant that Germany had never been in WCL.

There are of course always going to be anomalies in the system - the most pronounced of which is Oman, who are the second ranked Asian team in the WCL but are ranked 11th in the Asian region itself. Hong Kong are number 1 in Asia but are the third ranked Asian team in the WCL.

It’s probably not going to be settled down until the whole cycle has gone though at least three times, so we’re probably going to be waiting until the 2013 World Cup Qualifier before it starts to make sense!

Has the schedule for WCL Div 4 announced?

Jersey like their finals to be exciting don’t they.
personally i’d like to see 8 teams in Euro 1, with Jersey & Guernesy joining the six teams already in the top division. i’m of the opinion that 6 teams is to few. Andrew do you know if this is a possibility.

Laksh - no schedule announced as of yet.

fromefrog - not possible at all - ICC Europe have confirmed that it’s six teams per division for the foreseeable future - and in my opinion, that’s the best for such a tournament.

6 teams per division is the best really, that way everyone gets to play everyone else and you only have the weather to worry about. With 2 groups there is always the danger that one will be stronger than the other or that one bad result could mean the 2 best teams meeting in the semi final.

It would be good to see that system in Asia, but because there are so many strong teams I guess it’s less likely to happen. Despite the fact that Saudi Arabia beat UAE, three divisions would be fairer and more competitive with extra promotion and relegation places. If China take part then there are exactly 18 teams anyway.

All teams must fairly evenly spread ability wise as Spain beat Gibraltar twice in July to win Iberian Cup but no-one reported it, even though the ECC was aware the Cup was taking place.

    Looking at WCL Division 6
I think that the teams will probably be:

    Singapore
    Norway
    Botswana
    Mozambique

Pending any upsets in Africas Div 2 in October the next two best finalists in WCL Div 5 should get in.

Germany seem to have taken themselves out of contention with the performance in Europes Div 2.

Based on rankings Divsion 7 would then look something like:

    Guernsey
    Japan
    Surinam
    Zambia
    Malaysia

    plus one more?
    maybe Bahamas or Gibraltar

Two African teams? And how can you not put Americas Division One team Suriname in Division Six?
